Thank you for your interest in joining the Master Chorale of the Gainesville Civic Chorus. The next auditions will be held August 18th, 2024 between 4:00 and 6:00p in the University of Florida Music Building.
Scroll down for the audition request form, but here is information about us you might be interested in.
We are a non-profit community organization dedicated to bringing quality choral music to the public in the Gainesville area. Singing in the Gainesville Civic Chorus is an opportunity to refine your vocal technique and experience the joy of singing great choral works in a large chorus. The Chorus is continually seeking qualified singers for the soprano, alto, tenor, and bass voice parts. All Chorus members are members of the Master Chorale, and there are opportunities to sing with the Chamber Singers.
Rehearsals of the Master Chorale are Monday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Dress rehearsals and occasional extra rehearsals are scheduled for the week prior to a performance at the conductor's discretion.
Performances are scheduled at different venues in and around Gainesville and are typically on the weekends. There are concert dress requirements that vary by performance and venue.
There are annual dues, but it is our policy not to exclude anyone who is otherwise qualified to join because of membership costs. Music is loaned to the members, though some may be purchased when desired.
More information is available in our handbook.
Auditions for membership in the Master Chorale are normally held each year in August and again in January. At other times during the year, special requests for auditions may be made to the music director. These are held in the office of our music director, Dr. Will Kesling - room 126 in the Music Building on the University of Florida campus.
Each audition lasts about 10 minutes. It is not necessary to bring a prepared piece to perform. Dr. Kesling will ask you to sing a common hymn as he plays it on the piano in an appropriate key. Alternatively, he may ask for you to sing some other popular song of your choice. You will also be requested to vocalize and sing some scales to determine your range and appropriate voice part. He needs to have an opportunity to hear your voice quality and assess your musical ability. These skills must be adequate for you to keep up with the group at rehearsals because our rehearsal schedule for any concert is generally quite short and very concentrated.
